FAQ: What's the Difference Between 14k Gold-filled and Gold Vermeil?

Jewelry designers are faced with the myriad of material choices out there for our designs. Each type of material has its own look, feel and cost!

For Peggy Li Creations Handmade Jewelry, I choose to use the best quality materials while keeping my designs affordable for you.

So, what is the difference between materials like 14k gold-filled and gold vermeil?

14k Gold-filled -- I use only 14/20 gold-filled materials. Gold filled is a gold overlay where a thick layer of 14k gold is heat and pressure-bonded to a (typically)brass core. the "14/20" notation is the ratio of karat gold to brass core by weight. If you keep your 14k gold filled away from moisture and nicks, it should resist tarnish (turning color) very well.

Flat Shape Stud earrings in 14k gold-filled.
You get the rich look of gold with 14k gold-filled, without the cost of solid 14k gold.

Gold vermeil -- Gold vermeil is when gold is layered over a sterling silver. Typically, this layer is of 22-18k gold at 100 micro inches (2.5 microns) -- 50x heavier than a standard gold plate! Again, you get a rich 24k gold look without the cost. If you keep your gold vermeil away from moisture and damage, this should also resist tarnish. However, it does have a silver core which is subject to tarnish.

Vermeil style gold plate over silver/bronze Tree of Life Earrings.
Vermeil Style Most of the items marked "vermeil" on my website refers to the fact that the item is a gold plate over sterling silver. The company I use creates "vermeil style" gold plate that is 40 micro inches (1 micron) of 98.5% pure gold plated over sterling silver with a fine layer of nickel in between. This is durable and keeps the items more affordable.

Peggy Li Creations only occasionally uses other karat gold filled, gold plate or base metals, and this will be noted. I do use 10k, 14k or 18K golds for certain pieces and by request.

FAQ: How Do I Make a Homemade Jewelry Tumbler?

When you run a small business like Peggy Li Creations handmade jewelry, you learn to make the most of your jewelry resources and supplies and pick up any great tips to make your jewelry making life easier and simpler. OK, so here's a great tip I picked up from some wonderful jewelry making instructors. It's easy to make a homemade jewelry tumbler! What are tumblers good for? You can use a tumbler to help remove firescale from your soldered metal pieces, harden homemade headpins/earwires (that you make from dead soft wire), and polish/harden your sterling silver pieces!

Here's what you need:
  • Clean plastic mayo/peanut butter/sturdy plastic jar with screw-top lid. Not too big, because you'll be shaking it with your hands.
  • Blue Dawn dishwashing liquid soap.

Here's what you do with your homemade jewelry tumbler:
  1. Put shot in the jar about 2/3 of the way in. Put a little dishwashing liquid in with the shot and water to cover in the jar.
  2. Wire your silver pieces together (so they are easier to fish out) and drop them in the jar.
  3. Shake, shake, shake! Give it a good shake for a few minutes. Remove your pieces, rinse well.
  4. Don't forget to dry your shot thoroughly when done. I like to spread it out across a towel.
Another great alternative is to take some tupperware and use that if you don't have a clean plastic jar. It leaks a little when you shake, so be careful!

Blue Dawn soap and a tupperware-style container as your tumbler. I have 1 lb of shot in there!
That's it! Now, there is some debate as to whether tumbling actually "work hardens" metal, with many folks saying it does not do this. At the very least, a good tumble will clean and polish your pieces, so there is certainly still benefit to finishing your jewelry pieces in a tumbler.
Be sure to check out my handmade jewelry creations at Peggyli.com.

*UPDATE* - since this post I have since purchased a tumbler for my studio (my arms were getting tired!). I purchased a Lortone Tumbler, 3lb capacity from one of my fave supply stores, Beaducation. There is a handy video on the website as well, so check it out!

The Hardware Store is a Jeweler's Friend

I've just taken a few classes and learned some great new techniques involving manipulating metals. The instructors always have great tips based on their vast experience -- for example, there are plenty of tools you can pick up from the hardware store that can help you finish those dead-soft metal projects!

I just picked up:

14 gauge copper wire
Nail punches
Sanding block (fine grit)
Rough metal file (fine toothed, cheap kind)

And with only a few of my jeweler's tools, created this Poppy Pendant of sterling silver and copper rivets!

The sanding block and file were used to smooth the edges, the nail punches made the circle shapes, and the copper wire was used for the rivets.

Next time, I'll share how to make an inexpensive at-home tumbler!

FAQ: How Do I Remove Tarnish from Sterling Silver Jewelry?

I've got tons of sterling silver supplies that I use for my handmade jewelry business, Peggy Li Creations. Every now and then, there is a batch that has "turned" a brown or black -- this is a natural oxidation that occurs with sterling silver. It can be a pain to remove with a polishing cloth, but I just tried the greatest trick to removing tarnish from sterling silver! And it WORKS!

Note: If you have silver items that have oxidized details (black background with raised polished accents), or sayings stamped into your metal, this technique may remove that background contrast. If you just want the raised area cleaned, use a polishing cloth.

All you need are:

* Plastic dish (big enough to dunk your silver pieces. I use a tupperware dish)
* Aluminum foil
* Baking soda
* Hot water

1) Put a piece of the aluminum foil at the bottom of your dish. Place your silver pieces so they are in contact with the foil.

2) Put a few tablespoons of baking soda in the dish.

aluminum foil method of removing tarnish from silver

3) Heat your water to almost boiling (but boiling is not necessary) and pour over just enough to cover the pieces.

4) The mixture of baking soda, hot water, and aluminum foil will cause a bubbling/foaming chemical reaction. Swirl your items in the mixture or let soak for tougher tarnish. I took a video of this process here (look closely and see the silver brighten as the water clears at about :30 seconds in!):

5) Voila! You may even smell a little sulphur "rotten egg" smell as the reaction takes place. Rinse and the silver pieces should be clean and shiny once again! If heavily tarnished, try a few additional applications of soda and hot water, or maybe a fresh piece of foil.

What's happening? It's a basic chemical reaction that binds the aluminum to the sulfur oxides (you might see yellow flakes at the bottom of the dish) that the heat and contact with the aluminum foil accelerate. For all the cool science-y details, click here.

The chem-E in me loves it. Works great on chains. If you want to clean silver jewelry with stones or pearls, definitely keep the stones/pearls out of the water (the heat may change color, take away shine, or crack your gems!).

Don't want to try this method? You can always purchase my favorite silver polishing cloth, Sunshine Polishing Cloths from my website!

Peggy

Where Have I Been?

Sorry for not posting in such a long time! My goal when starting this blog was to post at LEAST once a week. Alas, "real life" often gets in the way.

I've gone back to working 4 days a week at online games company Pogo.com. My boss is out on maternity leave and I am trying to help fill in. Unfortunately, it means less time to work on the jewelry biz and more late nights!

In the meantime, I am looking forward to next TV season, not only for the return of "Lost" but also to get my jewelry on the cast of "Private Practice"!

'Till next time, Peggy.

FAQ: How Do I Drive Traffic to My Website?

This question is huge for small business owners, many who are starting their business with a website (it's so easy to do these days with Etsy, Paypal, Ebay stores and other online tools). I'll talk about what I've learned running my website, Peggy Li Handmade Jewelry and highly recommend searching the forums at The Switchboards Forum for tons of other information.

Here are a few things that I think drive traffic to my site:

1) Get The Word Out. This means going out and selling your work at local craft fairs and approaching local stores to have them sell your work. Get business cards made (pretty cheap to get 'em made online at places like PS Print or Vistaprint.com) and hand them out when you sell (make sure your website URL is on there.

Don't be afraid to talk about your business to anyone who will listen! Friends, family, coworkers. You never know who knows someone who knows someone who can help you.

Word of mouth is probably *the* most powerful form of marketing. People who are pleased with your product will tell their friends about it. Make it easy for people to remember you (make marketing materials, like biz cards) and find you (have a nice clean and easy-to-use website. Name it something simple, memorable and easy to spell!).

2) Optimize your website on the outside. Website design is really important to keep the traffic that do make it to your site, on your site. It should be easy to find and understand your products. It should be easy to find out how to purchase the items. Ideally, it should give off the personality of your brand! Once you have your site, show it to your friends and watch them click through the screens without your prompting them. See what problems they run into and *fix them*. Make it clear how customers can contact you and have an email mailing list they can sign up for.

3) Optimize your website on the inside. SEO, or search engine optimization, is something you may already be familiar with. You see the results every time you use Google or Yahoo Search. For your website, it is the art of making sure the words you use on the website accurately describe your products. That way, if someone is looking for "xx widget", they will see the search result of "xx widget" on your site!

Making sure your descriptions are "keyword rich" is very valuable... and they should be in the html text of your site. If it is all images or flash or javascript, you will lose the effect.

Another way to make sure the search engines will visit your site is to make sure you have Meta tags on your pages. This is code that the search bots read when they visit your site. Again, it should be descriptive of your site.

This is an ever-growing science, search engines change often and it is useful to use resources like The Switchboards to see what is new!

4) Get Linked. Another way to improve SEO is to get other websites to link to you. The most powerful effect would be if the sites linking to yours are sites related to your business.

5) Get Press. This can be a powerful tool, both offline and online. For tips on this (and getting linked), see my FAQ: How Do You Get Your Press?

6) Pay Per Click. This is using Google or Yahoo ads. These are the search results that appear as "sponsors" or to the right hand side of your search results. You can spend literally thousands of dollars on these types of ads in a blink of an eye. I recommend visiting a site like Google Adwords and really reading their FAQs to learn about the process. They also have tools to learn about keywords for search (useful for your own website SEO optimization). I spend a little money on this, and try and make sure I have tracking pixels on my site so I can track clicks to sales, but it is very new for me.

7) Submit your site... to everything! Especially search engines -- you can submit them to be sure they are indexed in their search. Got a blog? Submit your blog to blog directories. Make sure everything links back to your website!

That's it for now... it takes time and energy to constantly optimize and learn about the web and your site. You need to have a little patience. Monitor your web traffic and see if you can see patterns and learn where your traffic is coming from, and then double those efforts! Google Analytics is free and provides lots of ways to test your site traffic.

Good luck!

Adding More "Model" Photos to My Site

I think it helps give people a sense of scale and drape. I hope it makes a difference for shoppers.

What did I use?

1) A bright window with indirect sunlight
2) a Canon Powershot SD700 IS Digital Elph, Macro mode
3) edit in Photoshop

FAQ: Press Kits, Part II

Q. How should I package the kit?
A. Keeping in mind that these magazines get press kits day in, day out, so it could be helpful to try and package your kit to help it stand out. I use a nice presentation folder to hold my kit, as well as a colored envelope to mail it in, with colors to match my site/brand look and feel.

I've definitely tried more creative kits, with interactive elements to folders with fancy covers and higher-quality materials. It's a matter of cost and time and is up to you.

QUICK TIP #4: Don't make your kit so gimmicky that it detracts from your products or is so difficult to open/use that they'll just want to toss it.

Q. Should I include hi-res photos on CD?
A. I have never done this myself, but I hear that more and more magazines are open to receiving CDs. Especially for smaller publications, ones that will use your images directly and not take their own photos of the items (a Woman's World magazine, for example). Like everything else, be sure to label the disc clearly and label the images you upload onto it clearly (do not leave "100034dc.jpg" as the image name!). Imagine that the disc gets separated from your kit -- you want them to be able to identify the disc and pictures on it.

Q. Should I courier/FedEx/hand deliver my kit?
A. Unless it has been requested by a certain date by an editor, I believe there is no need to ship your kit overnight express or spend money on special handling. Mail it in a trackable way to ensure the delivery. From what I hear, you will get no special consideration for mailing a package in a more expensive way -- the most likely scenario is that assistants are screening the mail, and it all gets opened and put in a pile!

Q. What do I do to follow up?
A. Great question! It is probably a good habit to telephone a day or two after they have gotten your mailing with a polite, "Hi, I am so-and-so and I wanted to be sure you got my recent press kit. I'm available for questions, etc..." More often than not, you'll get an assistant on the line or a voice-mailbox. You will rarely get the editor in person (but be prepared for the possibility!). After the first round of press kits, I stopped phoning. But I don't think it hurts.

QUICK TIP #5: Don't be discouraged if you get no acknowledgement of a press kit you sent out! Rest assured that you will get filed and they will contact you if they want to. Keep them on your mailing list and hang tough! Keep trying to guess at what a particular publication is looking for and ... give it to 'em with the next kit.

Q. How often do I send a Press Kit?
A. There are four major seasons in fashion -- Spring, Summer, Fall, Holiday. In general, magazines are planning their issues about 3 months in advance. It is probably good practice to send a kit for each season, or the seasons where your line is strongest. I don't know for sure the timing, but based on the 3 month rule, give them some advance time on the season.

That's it for now, I hope that helps. Check out my Press success at the Peggy Li Creations Press Page.

FAQ: Press Kits 101, Part I

I was working on my Peggy Li Creations 2007 Press Kit and thought I'd go into more depth here about what goes into a press kit.

Q. What is a Press Kit, anyway?
A. A Press Kit is a compilation of information that can be hardcopy or digital (on CD-rom) about your company that you can send to magazines and anyone who wants information about your products and company.

Q. What should I include in a Press Kit?
A. There are a few schools of thought on this one. Here is a list of what I always include:
1. Cover letter: introduce yourself and your company. Write the letter to the specific person/organization you are targeting. Give a few examples of why they should review your product line. For example, if I were pitching to San Francisco Magazine, I'd be sure to emphasize how I am a local San Francisco designer!

QUICK TIP #1: Be sure to include all your contact information in your cover letter, and put your ID on every page (just in case your pages get mixed up or misplaced).

2. Bio: A brief and friendly description of yourself and your company. This is the place you can include more of a story about yourself and your business that didn't go into the cover letter. Here is a great place to play up the mythology of your business and what makes you unique, for example, if your work was inspired by your grandmother, or how you left a big corporate job to follow your dream, etc.

QUICK TIP #2: Consider including a photo of yourself in your bio. Think of how many magazines do designer profiles with photos -- they are interested in what you look like! This can also make sense if it goes with your story; if I'm pitching to an Asian American magazine, they can see I'm really Asian!

3. Line sheet: These are 1-2 pages (maybe more, but I wouldn't go over 3) showing images of your collection. They should be clean, clear and usually have a small description for each item, which includes the name, item number, and sometimes the retail price. Be sure to give a key for any terms you use. This is what the reader can use to ask for samples, so the easier to see and select items, the better! If you can visually group the items on the page (all the reds together, all the tops together, etc) I think that helps the reader scan the page for what they want.

3. Press sheet: Give a few clips of your most recent press. Reviews from friends and family unfortunately don't count.

QUICK TIP #3: Print out your pages on nice quality paper. Your pictures will come out better and it will feel more professional!

Stay tuned for Part II, which covers mailing and timing! And be sure to visit my website, Handmade Jewelry by Peggy Li.

Golden Globes Jewelry

The first glamorous event of the awards season arrived with a restrained elegance -- whites, Greecian columns, lacy blacks and beaded bodices. And, of course, jewelry!

Big trends: jeweled, metallic cuffs (like Angelina Jolie sports). Tons of gold and burnished gold jewelry (Angelina again!).
Another trend -- big, sparkly chandelier earrings, like the ones Jessica Biel (pictured) and Katherine Heigel wore.
Finally, earrings near to my heart. Long, lean gemstone earrings in what looks like smoky quartz and gold as seen on Mary Lynn Rajskub.
